any summer we went out of state to my grandparents, we usually fished at some point. back when we were young, the whole family would make a thing of it and they'd rent a pontoon on a large lake for the day. as we got older, we did more and more shore fishing and renting a boat was harder to do.
we'd catch all sorts of fish, but usually sunfish and bluegills with the occasional bass mixed in.. maybe rarely some pike or walleye. personally i was always happy catching some fat sunfish and bass, grandpa would fillet and fry them all up and they were always good eating. if you ask me, pikes are a nuisance to eat, of course nice to catch and they have a lot of meat, but the Y bones are so aids to deal with. i'd watch diligently when he taught my mom to fillet instead when he was starting to have trouble.
a few years ago, grandpa gave me a huge tackle box with all sorts of gear in it, even has a gaff hook that's comically oversized for anything we'd actually catch. when he sold his house, i bought a couple more tackle boxes and his military memorabilia. he's still around, but my mom isn't; it's hard to get back there without her insisting on visiting.
most of the fishing around here is fly fishing, which i do want to try, just don't have any relevant gear.
