>berbers and arabs, a more sophisticated culture
Berbers are historically the one of the most divided culture with no real sophisticated high culture. They got conquered over and over again because they refused to work together against any opponent ever. Berbers role in history can be summed up as a bunch of manlets inhabiting the most rugged terrains of North Africa (only places where their languages are spoken today) on the frontiers of civilization based in various clans and tribes.
Berbers are basically the opposite of civilization. While the Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Andalusians, Turks, or the French built cities and civilization on the coast the Berbers never truly amounted to much more than inhabiting the periphery in their little tribes or statelets in geographically advantageous positions.
In no way were they a sophisticated culture. Romanized or Arabized outliers like Saint Augustine are irrelevant.
