Yes, enginedev is pointless, but only for general purpose engines. If you think you can spend time upfront on a general purpose engine and use it for all your later games then you might as well use Unreal or Unity.

I just write my game in C, the engine and game is tightly coupled, i.e, the engine is designed to support a specific game. This drastically reduce development time, meanwhile increasing the overall quality of game.
