They could have probably made Phantom wood-element, but it would conflict with his aesthetics, I think. Like, I can buy the idea of Ninjas being generally wood-themed - you've got cliches like manifesting in a swirl of leaves, or swapping places with wooden logs, etc, but wood lends to earth-tones like brown or green, neither of which are present in Hidden Phantom's design.
Dark as an element is always in a weird position, because is it pure evil, or just shady? It's also strange to have dark as an element, without Light being present. Although, another anon mentioned it would be thematically appropriate for Dark - as an element - to be weak to Lightning, and I can buy that, but I'm not sure how it would fit in with the other elements; Dark.. smothers Fire? Fire burns ice ... Ice works on Elec for some reason? I guess that's the whole cycle.

Hidden Phantom being neutral element just feels undercooked
