The annoying part about the whole "subverting expectations" thing is not only as you said, it wasn't clever, that kind of thing was ALREADY DONE. In Empire! The one that's generally regarded as the best film in the series. This was a subversion of expectations. Nobody expected the Vader twist though it may seem hard to believe, Luke failed his training and test and then got his shit stomped. Most of the problem with these cynical hacks is that they don't realize how subversive the material actually already was.
