However, it was too happy of an end for a character like him. Ed deserves to die alone and as a pariah, unable to see Al and the others as the consequences of his existence, personality and actions).

A poster brought up a much superior story of Mushoku Tensei above. In that story, Rudeus loses his hand, but that's fine because it becomes actually an advantage later on when he designs his prosthetic that has a magic absorbing gem. The only actual loss that he experienced in that story was that of his father, but that's such a small loss on the grand scheme of things that it's still on the tolerable level. However, if you ask me if I think that the story would have been better if his dad had survived and his mum hadn't turned into a vegetable, I'd say yes.

If Rudeus had lost his abilities at the end to save one or all of his wives, it would have made the ending much, much worse. Even if you included some thematically, artistically, or logically consistent reasoning why he has to give up his abilities. Say, for example, spinning it as "the abilities were only borrowed because he's not a native of the world and thus he has to eventually give them up, so it was a choice between his powers and his family and he made the right one". That would have been a MUCH worse ending to the story.
