I sound like a broken record at this point but if you want to find real people you should give bulletin boards a try. Any BBS you will find will be run by an individual and the tech is too old and obscure to attract and commercial interests.
The communities are small but different boards are linked by nets like fidonet or tqwnet which allows people to message each other despite being on boards.
Its not for everyone but it's fun and the ANSI art is cool. If you like it you can even host your own with ease.
