I need a *grid*, don't care for background visuals and as the DM I usually just do quick scribbles to represent walls and obstacles, or online throw in a few images, sometimes more if I have the time and willingness to prepare.
I refuse to play D&D with theater of the mind. If we played a different system I'm ok with it, but if we're already d&drones then I demand a grid.

It's far too much effort to be worth it, but it would have a cool side effect of players never having a meta hint as to when a fight might happen. Right now if I start scribbling a battlemap, the players know a fight is coming. Sometimes I ask the party to position themselves in their walking formation on the grid, even though no fight is approaching, jsut to keep them on their toes.
