I feel like the fact that you didn't engage with the game's systems enough to beat the final boss fair and square somewhat undermines your critique. FFX is not a particularly difficult RPG and never requires grinding.
Even at a very low level you should be able to beat all of the mandatory boss fights just by using the plentiful powerful consumables the game gives you.
In particular, the one that doubles Max HP for one battle essentially removes any need to grind from the game once you have access to it because of the incredible amount of additional sustainability it gives your party.
I don't think the gameplay of FFX is perfect either, but you're underselling just how many options and strategies you have access to and how much freedom you have to approach challenging fights in different ways.
You can certainly play it like a connect-the-dots puzzle and grind (or cheat) your way through hard fights, but by doing that you miss out on a lot of what makes FFX great.

With characters like Rikku the concept is that you'll play the game when you're about the same age as her and she might end up being your first ever crush. For a lot of people that like her, that's exactly what happened and they never stopped having a crush on her. Personally, I think that's romantic and very cute.
But yeah, if you weren't aware, the age of consent in Japan is 13. If you don't like sexy teenage girls in your RPGs, you are playing games by the wrong country.
