Don't forget that it isn't just about the skills in the "Skill" tab, but also there are skills in the "Career Events" tab by clicking there.
It's ok to not bother with all this stuff in your first/second runs since everything is too dense to take in, but it can help to start to pay attention, some cards are directed to certain types of runners (front/pace/late/end) but some skills are universal and everybody can benefit.
