It's a retcon to his previously almost nonexistent lore. They did this thing where they had the good guy faction being secretly manipulated by a evil dragon with magic, so everything they ever did was bad.

Also not really. They're really totally unrelated from my understanding. In Lovecrafts works everything is basically normal, and fine. The evil forces tend to be thwarted, or so alien that the planet, or the literal forces of reality are inhospitable to them.
