This reminds me of the sequel to Pacific Rim, they focus so much on telling us why the new characters are better than the pilots from the first film, that they forget to show why they are better or in the worst case they don't justify it, like the girl who built a Jeager with only garbage, when in the previous film they explained that its creation was so expensive and difficult that they had canceled its production worldwide, the last one being the British-Australian model.
