That's not how I saw it. I picked up random weapons until I found the claymore, then killed every boss in the base game by pressing a lot of r1 and holding down r2.
Except with Malenia, because I got mad after 15 hours and summoned the mimic tear, killing her within 2 minutes. I think her boss fight would be fine if her stagger/stance-break worked like you'd expect it to. The rest of her abilities working together is pretty cool.
Point is, I played ER exactly like I played DS1, 2 and 3; go hit shit with the sword, and it didn't feel like I needed to look up bosses/frame data.
I much prefer DS1 and I didn't like end-game ER on account of bossing being my least favorite part and the end-game bosses being very difficult (compared to anything DS1 puts out). Otherwise, the combat in ER was fun. It has everything DS1 had, more content, and an "easy" button on r2 for those who want to play the game with only the blue bar. Most everything was killable with the claymore withlout using r2 and I stopped leveling at 120-125. Unlike the Malenia fight, I didn't get stuck very long, except with Rykard, because I'm a moron and thought it was the same Yhorm fight, down to only being allowed fully-charged r2s).
Most everything else went smoothly. Love fighting death birds, love fighting huge things, love one-shotting mooks, love trading hits, just hack, slash and don't stand in the fire.
