I hate to say this but your buddy was a cunt. I played a lot of Starcraft, Warcraft 2, Age of Empires and Myth with friends and we always did wacky shit but never specifically countered anything at least on purpose. It was more mind games than anything, trying to secretly forge alliances and then maneuver the other guy into a position where you can betray him and still win the game even if all you're doing is massing priests to convert his shit.
