It has some of the best turn-based combat in all of vidya. As for non-combat gameplay, it revolves around resource management (including your characters) and preparing for excursions; not being properly prepared is arguably the most dangerous thing in the game. Also making the right discussions in in bad situations.

Yeah you might get frustrated here and there at something that seems like bullshit but when the tide turns and things go your way, there's no better feeling. It's a lot of fun.
