It's really more like Max Brooks probably heard a warped version of the early M16 story

It's the standard nerd shit of hearing some obscure information that goes against the grain and wanting to spread it for the sake of being contrarian. But then between Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z it's writ large into the whole military apparatus. Hence why the magical zombie war rifle is pretty much just an M14 that only fires in semi-auto.
Mind you I do like Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z but it's one of those "i read this thing once and made it my entire personality" kind of situations.
