You know how in many competitive games, sometimes even singleplayer or coop games, people really care about the meta? Like sometimes they don't even really play the game to get a feel for it, but they go look up what is meta play is ASAP? That is what many 40k players do. Wouldn't say the vast majority but when you play enough, you can tell when they're using certain units because of the meta, not because if it's even kosher for their army fluff.

Add a side of hyper-focused nerd-tism and you'll get spergs who don't learn why people won't play with them. Oh and tabletop costs lots of money.
