PD is a cursed blessing from the one winged angel, a eldritch beast that got interested in humanity and wished to give it immortality. Its version of immortality was becoming stone (outside of a handful given actual immortality). Ergo is the natural form of PD, Ergo is all People, baby. the PD we see in game is an entirely Alchemist meddling to evolve and get more people immortal, which instead of turning you into stone makes you a zombie. The reason so many people turn into carcasses is because of Elxir and Alchemist meddling; they poisoned the water supply for instance. If you don't have strong will or body you become a Carcas or mutant, if you have the shit you become a champion like Victor or the Complete, if you are an extra special you become a listener like sophia. The reason puppets gain sentience is because puppets are powered by the people rocks, people rocks react to the puppets and gain back sentience over time. With enough people rock in the right circumstance you can do some magic shit, see P slowly become Carlo. It helps if the Puppet is in a situation that reminds them of their old life, or if the puppet looks like the person the Ergo is suppose to be.
