I think there are several angles to it.
There's the nationalistic "America #1, fuck those other weird foreign assholes" mentality, which made Americans so allergic to foreign cultures they need to dub everything and change rice balls to cookies or jelly donuts to make Japanese media more palatable.
There's the Christian soccer mom angle, combined with the "cartoons are for kids" mentality to create a deadly one-two punch of "those dirty evil Japs are marketing porn to kids" mentality that led to shit like pic related.
There's the WW2 angle, in which Japan is painted in a bad light with Pearl Harbor (provocation for the attack and America's foreknowledge of it conveniently omitted) and extra emphasis on the kamikaze attacks, making them out to be suicidal maniacs.
I do think nationalism may play the biggest part of it though. Just look at how psychotic sportballs fans get about Team Us vs Team Them. It's no stretch to think gamers would act the same for Country Us vs Country Them.
