Never had issues manually hitting enemies' weakspots with guns, and if aiming isn't your thing you can get boost your lock-on spec with certain head parts.
Melee has a bit of a learning curve because every weapon have its own timing and you need to attack while moving (or else enemies will delete your health bar).
In my experience, katana (Sabi, not Murasama), greatsword and spear have a very generous range and it's easy to memorize their timing (you want to press the attack button half a sec before getting close to the enemy). Unfortunately the first few melee weapons you find are a shortsword and a laser dagger and their range is very short so you need to hug enemies to hit them (or jump and aim for hitspots). Attacking enemies while they are reloading helps a lot in early levels.
I suppose a fat flying ball isn't really a good example but the thread is dying and this is the only webm I have.
No idea about the "floaty" part.
