I've noticed a lot of the people who hate it on Reddot and Twatter are women who say they were "obsessed" with the first movie and while it's stylistically very different than 28 days it shares that similar theme of a boy learning to become a man and overcoming his own fear.
The whole mother dying from cancer thing is probably something people don't understand because it's from the perspective of a boy about his own mother.
