I don't get how shortening the projectile improves the situation though...
They seem to not understand that energy is conserved. All you have to do is keep the mass of the projectile relatively constant.
So you shorten it and turn it into a sharpened broadhead dart instead of a needle. A flechette. Any steel edge can be sharpened to razor hair whittling sharpness.
