I think he's a pitiable character, and in another walk of life he might have done just fine and found a wholly different purpose, but at the end of the day he still went out of his way to ignore orders knowing that he had men under his command whose lives were in his hands.

If it had turned out well, people might have called him hero. But in a scenario where everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong, he was responsible for a lot of death and couldn't accept that.
