I agree that the two stop was a mistake but they were forced into it by Ferrari before they had the problem.
It's not the team's priority to maximise a result over the other car, it's to maximise the results vs the other 18 cars.
I think what caught out Piastri's side of the garage was that Norris was consistently punching in mid 1:20s lap after lap with little deviation.
Piastri at his fastest in the final stint could only manage mid to late 1:19s which was not fast enough for an overtake.
I think Mediums was the best shot for Piastri to win the race but maybe the team trusted previous day data over current track conditions too much.
Alonso proved the mediums were robust enough to last a good distance at a consistent speed.
