Sticking pure element for every character is arguably the most efficient and reliable way to play (the "meta" if you will) but you only see a portion of the psynergies in the game, and its kinda too easy most of the time. If you only stick with the core setup because its the best, its just optimizing the fun out of the game. Most of the fun of games like FF5 doesn't come from running 4 adventurers with shit like rapid fire dual wielding mystic knights casting holy sword and attacking 8 times in a row while Mighty Guarded: It comes from all of the times you have to make each job and the loadout you give them work with each situation they're given. Its why the Job Fiesta is such a popular concept in general. Being suboptimal and making the game more challenging as you have to adapt to more situations breathes life into games.
