I think it just goes to show that SH2’s story and overall presentation is just THAT good and that it’s perfectly valid to like a game just for that reason. The Silent Hill subreddit went from praising to constantly clowning on the OG while singing the remake’s praises like everything it does is an objective improvement including all the things that made the OG actually stand the test of time (aka everything but the gameplay which I will always maintain is serviceable but mediocre aside from the puzzles which are all great) but there’s simply no denying that the combat feels repetitive even if it technically plays a lot better which in itself isn’t exactly a big achievement.
The enemy and weapon variety simply doesn’t account for the massive increase in forced encounters and they even outright removed two weapons and any secondary attacks for the melee ones and the steel pipe is literally just the plank except for a slight increase in damage. It doesn't even have a longer reach like in OG. Two of the bosses also have the same spider form too which sucks since I always loved how surreal the Flesh Lips fight was for them hanging off the ceiling and sliding around.
It also has less replay value because of their decision to stretch the length of the game to 3x that of the OG and to not include the Hyper Spray or the 10 Star Ranking but I guess most people don't really care about that. They rarely finish the first playthrough anyway. The two extra endings sadly don't really make up for it either.
