It turns out Madhouse had a lot on its plate that year, and all their directors were busy. Then the inexperienced Araki pitched himself to Maruyama (Madhouse's founder) whom he often disagreed with and fought during production. Maruyama answered "Haha, fool! No way that's happening". Then 1-2 weeks later Maruyama asked him again "Are you seriously going to do it?", Araki confidently said "Of course I'm serious". The rest is history.
