I believe that humanity, according to Miyazaki, becomes debased when not provided with higher ideals to strive towards. Like the martial, chivalric culture of Gwyn's Age of Fire, something that makes them aim to be *more* than human, to overcome themselves.
Thinking about it, locusts might be a good metaphor for "pure" humanity. Ugly existence for the sole purpose of filling your stomach.
