This game is a turn based 3 v 3 battle format where you "scan" digimon every battle to slowly get enough information to make your own, CHOOSE what you want to evolve into from several lines at a time by reaching certain requirements, and go back and forth to increase stat caps and to gain abilities from certain digimon lines.
In both previous games, you could get to ANY digimon line from ANY digimon line by devolving and evolving. If you find a move you like that isn't a Digimon's "signature" move(the big animated one is that), it's learnable. You can take I think 7 extra attacks besides your digimon's signature that use an MP system instead of Pokemon's PP system. You also get free attack and defend commands that does a basic attack and obviously blocks damage respectively.
Through this you can effectively customize any digimon to have any moveset you desire. It's up to you to find the best digimon for the job by studying their types and stats.
