In Shadow gens Shadow is literally disinterested in responding to anything Maria says unless she talks about something directly relevant. Shadow doesn't have time or even seem to pay any mind to things he deems unimportant, including the things Maria says. His internal monologue doesn't even acknowledge it. He doesn't hug her back when she hugs him. In the manga he couldn't even be bothered to show Maria any sort of affection and he's even annoyed by her. He's an angsty cunt and he's apathetic to Maria's kindness towards him.
