VIII is very much a male power fantasy. Not a bad thing btw, most things I like are. Sure, they have a power of friendship moment in the Ragnarok but as the game is there's only minor character development for anyone else.
It is at its core about Squall overcoming anxiety and opening up to people while becoming a badass swordsman.
I've looked heavily into the original ideas for the game and like to imagine, too, but it is what it is.
