I've played the RT coop a lot.

The other players can walk around the map but they cannot start dialogue, it just goes right to the main character. People can click on which dialogue option they want you to select and their little portrait is next to that option, but all dialogue is in the hands of the captain, it's not a vote.

You can give every player as many characters as they want. Meaning you can give them Abelard/Argenta/etc/etc in addition to their custom mercenary character. They will follow and mover according to that player's formation.

If someone walks into a fight, the fight will start with everyone in the spots they're in, which can be very bad if people were wandering around. So make sure you collect everyone before you walk to fights.

All the other players characters take a nap while you're on the bridge of the ship, so only the captain character walks on the ship, until you go to the map or the elevator to go to one of the ship areas. Basically, the other players don't exist until you select a party to add them to when the game does the "select party" screen before leaving the bridge.

All other players choose a rank 2 alignment and don't change past that, just like a mercenary you hire from Janrus.

All in all, I do enjoy it, but mostly because I love RT and my group is accommodating of jank. BG3 really spoiled everyone when it comes to multiplayer since everyone's character was separate and could do quests and combats and even dialogue completely separate from each other. But if you like RT and accommodate some jank then RT coop is fun.
