Dune uses shields. So armor could be completely worthless if the melee weapons can rip through metal as easily as cloth. Hell, even shadowrun has monofilament whips and that's not even space age stuff.
If you want your sci-fi girlies to wear bulky armor, that's completely understandable. It's your aesthetic choice. Some want skimpy fun armor, which is also understandable.
