and I'll confess along with young adult scifi, before that I was unto the R.A. Salvatore Drizzt Do'Urden Forgotten Realms D&D books. That line of lit/slop got me into reading as a kid.
I'd even read new books at the Borders bookstore on their nice couches after school; little by little. Never having to buy the books.
It was like a comfy commercial library I would use for free. Those were more civilized times (high trust/less covid).
