Something similar happened to me, but with a figure. They increased the box size so I could no longer select small packet as shipping option. Some time later, I asked them if it was possible to ship the original box, and they told me that international shipping requirements were different than domestic shipping, so I had I accept the risk.

I found this pic of a japanese package and yeah, even using Amico's military grade boxes, there's no way this would survive international shipping.
