rules were different, people would "sage" your post as a way of a downvote. also I remember /e/ being very strict. Most of the stuff that is posted there now would get you banned back in the day. NSFW stuff was off-limit for /a/ too. memes typically consisted of a picture with big font white text captioned under or on it. most users were in their teens so it was slightly more immature. but at its heart 4chan is one of those sites that hasn't changed much.
