If you really dont wanna do the car maybe consider backpacking the Appalachian trail or something similar--but to me rucking 8 hours a day it just not inviting - this pic is from a mountain in vermont along a backpacking route where they have little huts along the trail with bunks in them you can sleep in
But there is not a ton of federally owned land in that region so you really do have to stick to the trail and will not have as many option in the easter part of the USA
The western part has tons of just open unused land owned by the govt
