The point is there's absolutely a tightrope in play with her character, and one that hasn't really met a satisfying head on either side at this point.

On one hand you have the love-crazed Sonic fangirl who has no idea what personal space or "he's just not into you like that" is and the other a kind of granola girl who's just there without actually adding anything to the friends group without building any genuine rapport with anyone like the male trio has with one another. She does better with her own character circle but people want to see her tied to Sonic so they haven't found a way to deliver on that to give her a compelling personality.
