Is it easy being a muslim in the USA?

I live close to a mosque and will be moving closer to it pretty soon because I love the area. I've been to it a few times and really like the people and Islamic theology. I once almost took shahada but some pakistani guy freaked me out that day and I couldn't do it.

I'm still not set in stone. I also have to consider my atheist gf and i'm in the American south. Can anyone speak from experience Muslim or not?
