Isn't that an example of the trope being used well though? D only joins the organization because he's a shapeshifter and it's the best way for him to kill the Dragon Keepers by finding a chance to stab them in the back. D only "joins" them to further his own goals while Kafka basically get's strong-armed by the plot into losing all his autonomy.
