Of course his goal turned from wanting to destroy the planet to protecting it, but that doesn't mean his willingness to use morally dubious methods to achieve his goal has gone away. Shadow is not a purposely cruel boy, but if he thinks manipulating someone is the only way to achieve Maria's wish, he'll do so.
