>People who have partially mechanized their bodies. People who are not enhanced humans often become cyborgs to adapt to the harsh conditions of space. However, the process of becoming a cyborg involves massive up-front costs and expensive upkeep. The poor, who cannot receive official procedures, mostly rely on cheap and dangerous black-market surgeries, or they enlist in the Stellar Forces, where cyberization is free and parts are provided. Kurt and Max have military background.
The creator also added this:

>A. Well, as long as the brain and pituitary gland are still intact, the person’s human ego is considered to remain, so they’re classified as cyborgs. Makina and similar characters are supposed to have those organs still in their heads, but I was too lazy to put that info in any official materials, which has led to some confusion.
