I think it's the oldest thing with 3d anime characters. I think, at least, a texture based highlights on their own layer, so they dont move around with the iris, is optimal. You might want some uguu crazy nonsense highlights. I have a flat texture shader for some eyes. The high lights are real specular highlights, and I used a spherical normal map on the eye portion of the texture to sharpen the high light up. It works OK, but the spot will disappear in the many lighting conditions where it logically wouldnt, and I lose the Anime(tm) look. I might switch to textured highlights.
