The Catapult CPLT-L1 was a rare and short lived variant of the venerable Catapult produced by the Capellan Confederation. The L1 variant eschewed the role of long range fire support to focus on being a close range ambusher. The LRM-15s were exchanged for six Holly SRM-4s, and one of the medium lasers were exchanged for a flamer in the anticipation of the increased possibility of encountering enemy infantry while on the front lines. The armor was increased to 11 tons, mainly to protect the vulnerable arms where the majority of its firepower was concentrated. With only two tons of ammo supplying six launchers, the CPLT-L1 shared the same limited ammo endurance as the C1.
The envisioned doctrine for the mech would be for it to be hidden crouched in difficult terrain such as jungles, shallow water, or swamps and lay in wait while lighter or conventional units drew enemy forces towards it hiding place, whereupon it would unleash a crippling short range volley before using its jump jets to relocate in the face of return fire.
In light of the L1s numerous flaws, chiefly the insufficient amount of heat sinks for its concentrated short range weapons load, the fact that it would be unable to outrun or outgun most light and medium mechs after its ammo had been expended, the reliance on favorable terrain, and the ultimately the use of such an irreplaceable mech in such a risky role led to most L1s eventually being converted back to C1 standard.
