I don't know you, you don't need to defend yourself to me. It just does seem like you're insulted by word and it's stopping you from thinking clearly. Purple prose is one of those things that used to be considered good writing, but has gone out of style to the point it's considered bad writing.
Calling something pretentious is a fashion statement that pretty aptly explains why someone doesn't like it. I'm sure there's value in analyzing where people using the term are coming from, but automatically taking everything you don't get negatively isn't necessary. If I called 16th century fashion pretentious, it might not be the most optimal word you'd use if you do a week of deep lexical analysis, but it conveys the thought, doesn't it?
