That's because of the implied history they have (Android Yamcha, Turtle Master Krillin, Videl with Z sword), but the specials about their past are lame. What if Goku wasn't sent to Earth and how was Bulma's initial adventure up until the 21st tournament? Grandpa Gohan went along with her and it was pretty much the same (Save for Grandpa Gohan winning the tournament)! That tells us nothing!
