I mean, of course it is - there really aren't any ports on the SS86 Grimlock mold that can be used to keep the bits permanently plugged into.

But it does? The fins can't be too big because the head still has to be able to fold back, but they are indeed there.

There was never going to be a neat way of doing that - Godzilla has three rows of fins on his back, one running straight down his spine, with the other two flanking it. As is such, there wouldn't have been a clean way of splitting the shield piece down the middle without making the center row of spines thick enough to also split, which would have looked chunky and ugly.
It's not perfect, but it certainly looks much closer to Godzilla than the vanilla figure - and is certainly far more passable than "Kiryu" Optimus.
