The artist who made the BG2 portraits just traced photographs of real people, this is why Aerie looks so terrible, because he actually attempted to draw her straight up without tracing, maybe because she's an Elf. I assume he did this before just throwing up his hands and just tracing for Viconias portrait as well after he realized he can't draw otherwise.
