Angel Island is a surprisingly versatile biome. It's not all jungle. And when Eggman came, he introduced him to his machines and created a carnival and a launch base on the island. Knuckles has some idea, also considering his amateur treasure-hunting/archeology. When he first appears in Station Square, his initial reaction is wincing at the bright sunlight (ic).

I almost prefer the original, but I can imagine that it was designed with the lighting they almost went with on Dreamcast, which would've made it perfect.
