In GW's case it *is* their fault, all books not written directly by them are considered non-canon until they say otherwise and they reserve the sole right to point to a book and declare that the work is or is not a part of the greater whole, even their own. Especially their own. It's a losing battle to ever care about the details because it won't matter in the end, and GW will keep it that way so they can play fast and loose with their IP to always be able to chase new markets
